Money sought for HVAC project at Botetourt Elementary

The Gloucester County School Board voted Tuesday to ask county supervisors for the approximately $184,000 the school board has remaining in unspent FY2013 operating funds. The money would be used to complete a HVAC replacement project begun last year at Botetourt Elementary School.

School division finance director Joann Wright said she expects the end-of-year total to be about $393,000, although accounts have not yet been audited. She said $109,000 of that amount is committed to uncompleted contracts, and county supervisors already approved putting $100,000 of the total toward relocating division administration offices to the former T.C. Walker Elementary School.

The school board also voted to ask supervisors to support an application for $1,041,000 from the Virginia Department of Transportation through its revenue-sharing program. The money would help pay for roadway improvements to accommodate the new Page Middle School being built on T.C. Walker Road.

The grant would require the same amount in matching local funds, which Gloucester schools superintendent Ben Kiser said would come from funds already allocated to the division for the Page project. He said the $2 million plus total would pay to widen T.C. Walker Road from Page to its intersection with Route 17 and install a traffic signal at the intersection.
