The Mathews Board of Supervisors adopted an emergency resolution Tuesday exempting county residents whose property sustained damage during Hurricane Irene from having to pay permit fees for construction and reconstruction of structures and shorelines.

According to the document, the exemptions do not apply to work that increases the square footage of a structure, requires a public hearing, or is unrelated to storm damage. They also don’t apply to state and federal fees.

Applicants must still apply for permits and provide all the necessary information for granting them, according to the resolution. In addition, the work performed must still comply with all applicable requirements.

The emergency resolution is good retroactively from Aug. 27 through Dec. 31.

Exemptions will be granted for the following: building permits, electrical permits, mechanical and plumbing permits, permits for moving a building or structure, permits for demolishing a building or a structure, zoning clearances not requiring public hearings, wetlands permits not requiring public hearings, and erosion and sediment control permits.
