The Mathews County Board of Supervisors pledged to provide matching funds and in-kind services for a pair of grant applications designed to improve the Court House area, if those grants are approved.

The board, during its meeting on Tuesday, also gave its support to a third grant application for a countywide historical survey.

A Community Development Block Grant that the Main Street Committee, property owners, county staff, and a consultant have been working on for over a year could bring more than $700,000 in funds to the county for revitalization of Mathews Main Street and for a proposed park at the old sewage treatment plant property.

As part of the CDBG grant, the county will ask for up to an additional $300,000 for revolving loan funds for both interior and exterior improvements to downtown properties, said planning and zoning director John Shaw.

Supervisors agreed to provide $137,645, mostly through use of in-kind services, if that grant is awarded.
