Mathews schools keeping close eye on expenditures

With concerns over the 2012-2013 budget looming large for Mathews County Public Schools, Superintendent David Holleran is still keeping a watchful eye on this year’s budget.

Holleran presented a list during Tuesday night’s school board meeting of approximately $75,000 in "unexpected expenses" the division has had to absorb so far this budget year. Items ranged from a pair of bus engines and a tire balancing machine to a new floor for the Mathews High School auditorium.

In a normal budget, Holleran said, this would not be an issue, since there would be money set aside for repairs and other unforeseen issues. However, the past few years have been anything but normal, as revenues have dwindled significantly. But even with these expenses, Holleran said that he still expects the division to come in at budget.

"Right now, we’re on track to pretty much break even," he said. "It’s tight," Holleran said, adding that he was "just making (the board) aware" of the matter. He said he would have a better feel for the current budget situation by April or May.

Looking ahead to the proposed 2012-2013 budget, Holleran is getting some indication that the state’s contribution may not be quite as bad as originally expected.
