Mathews residents who question their reassessments have until Monday to make an appointment with the board of equalization.

The board, which is composed of Mathews County residents, provides property owners a second opportunity to have their assessments reviewed for errors and possibly changed if a mistake has been made. The first opportunity was for residents to talk with the assessor. The third and final step will be to challenge the assessment in circuit court.

Dates and times currently available for appointment are: Tuesday, Feb. 1, 5-8 p.m.; Wednesday, Feb. 9, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 11, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesday, Feb. 15, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday, Feb. 17, 6–9 p.m.; Thursday, Feb. 24, noon to 4 p.m. and 5–8 p.m.; and Friday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Commissioner of the Revenue Ray Hunley said there are three ways to make an appointment with the board of equalization: call his office at 725-7168 by 4 p.m. Monday, send an e-mail to cofreven@gmail.com by midnight Monday, or write a letter postmarked by midnight Monday to: Mathews County Commissioner of the Revenue, P.O. Box 896, Mathews, Va. 23109, ATTN: Board of Equalization.
