Mathews personal property tax assessments questioned

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors questioned Commissioner of the Revenue Ray Hunley about vehicle tax assessments Tuesday afternoon during the monthly board meeting.

Chairman Charles Ingram told Hunley he had received a complaint from a resident whose truck was assessed a value of $31,000, when the same truck in Gloucester was assessed a value of only $27,000.

"How come we’re pricing them higher?" asked Ingram.

Hunley explained that the vehicle in question, which was purchased last year for $37,000, had a value of $31,000 on Jan. 1, but the owner had only recently taken it to Ken Houtz Chevrolet-Buick in Gloucester, where he was offered $27,000 for a trade-in.

"You can’t go and get a value in January and get a trade-in 10 months later for the same," said Hunley. "I guarantee that everyone in Mathews with that same model is paying the same, as required by law."
