Mathews Market Days crowds estimated at 10,000

One of the more popular features at Mathews Market Days is the Pet Parade, and this year was no exception with 24 entries on Saturday morning. Here, Christiana Wood, daughter of Scott and Tracey Wood, takes her 6-month-old Araucana chicken, Fluffy, on a wagon ride in the parade. Fluffy was awarded the Henny Penny Award for Glamour.
Kerri Hudgins, daughter of Tommy and Marti Hudgins, holds her gerbil Starlight, who won the Mighty Mouse Award for smallest pet.
The crowds on the court green appeared to be thinner than during some past Market Days, but Flippin said that could have been because people were participating in activities and visiting booths throughout downtown Mathews.
In any event, Flippin said craft and food vendors seemed pleased and reported that sales went well.
"There were always people strolling through," she said. "I think people are spreading this out over two days now because there’s so much to see and participate in."
Court Street, where food vendors set up their booths, was packed during lunch time, she said.
A visitor from California expressed delight with the YMCA’s crab races, said Flippin. She said she had never seen anything like it and took a turn in spite of the fact that all the other participants were children.
