Library launches construction of addition

Mathews Memorial Library and Friends of the Library will launch the construction of the library addition from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, at the library. The community is invited.

The event is free and will feature a look at the design plans, tours of the site, refreshments, music, activities and prizes.

Festivities include a tribute by teens to all those who created the library and developed its resources. They will also discuss the library’s current role in the community and the ways in which the addition prepares Mathews for the future.

The library addition, to be named The H. Bland Hudgins Wing, will provide dedicated space for a teen center, expanded public reading areas, community meetings, and added storage and staff support. The project will also relieve overcrowded areas in the main library, especially in the archives and the children’s areas.

A campaign has been underway to raise $1.3 million for the project—to date, $1.1 million has been given by individuals, families, businesses, groups, private foundations and the county. A balance of $200,000 remains to be raised.

For more information, contact board president Maree Morgan at librarybuildingproject@gmail.com or 725-3121, or visit www.mathewslibrary.org.
