Lady Devils finish second in state, topping Rye Cove to reach final

Members of the Mathews High School varsity volleyball team celebrate after defeating Rye Cove 3-0 in Friday’s state semifinal game. Although the Lady Devils went on to fall to Nelson County in Saturday’s Group A, Division 1 championship game, coach Pat Moughon’s girls had an amazing season nonetheless, posting a 28-2 record, winning the district and regional titles and earning the state’s Sportsmanship Award.
To get to the state title game, Mathews first had to get by Rye Cove in the tournament semifinals on Friday. Mathews had little trouble with the Eagles, sweeping them in three straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 25-12.
The Lady Devils came pumped and ready for anything that Rye Cove could throw at them. Mathews did especially well in passing, and everything else just seemed to fall into place.
