More than a dozen youth are participating in this week’s Kids Kayak and Conservation Camp sponsored by the Mathews Maritime Foundation and Mobjack Kayaking. Campers have been enjoying activities both on land and in the water. Land-based activities have been held at the West Mathews Community Center in Bohannon and water-based activities from a private shoreline on the East River. Above from left, kayakers Lauren Everhart, Michael Murray, Jesse Waldron, Andrew Choate, Alex Eley, Sable McNulty, Dylan Gibson, Dylan White, Jonathan Waldron and lead instructor Dianne Campbell return to shore after learning various kayak rescue techniques in the East River. Below, Brandon Powell, left, and Gabe Choate show off their water scopes that they were planning to use Wednesday to explore the shoreline along the East River. Instructors from a variety of organizations, including the National Park Service, Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 66, the Mathews Master Gardeners, the Middle Peninsula chapter of the Archeological Society of Virginia, spent time teaching various skills to the campers.Photos by Quinton Sheppard
