Hazardous household chemical collection and electronics recycling will be available to residents of Mathews and Middlesex counties from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department, 3309 Twiggs Ferry Road, Hartfield. No items will be accepted from businesses.

Chemicals typically found in and around the house will be collected, said a press release, including but not limited to maintenance substances such as oil or latex paint, stains, solvents, and glue; automotive supplies such as gasoline and other fuels, waxes, gas and oil mixtures, brake fluid, engine cleaner and tar remover (but excluding motor oil and antifreeze); and lawn and garden supplies such as insecticides, weed killers, pesticides and fertilizers.

Household cleaning supplies such as oven cleaners, drain cleaners, floor waxes, metal polishes, bleach, degreasers, septic tank cleaners, toilet cleaners and jewelry cleaners will also be accepted, as well as charcoal fuels, dyes, kerosene, swimming pool and photo-finishing chemicals, and fluorescent light bulbs, including CFLs.

Residents are encouraged to check their garages, storage sheds, basements, kitchens, and bathrooms for items to dispose of at the collection, the release stated.

Items that won’t be accepted include explosives, household trash, compressed gas cylinders, radioactive products, ammunition or gun powder, business or medical waste, and large quantities of unknown products.
