Hearing Tuesday on proposed bed and breakfast

The Mathews County Planning Commission and the Mathews County Board of Supervisors will hold a joint public hearing on an application for conditional use permit for a bed and breakfast on Tuesday in the historic courthouse.

William H. Metzger, trading as Blue Water Haven LLC, has requested a permit to operate a bed and breakfast inn on 3.34 acres zoned residential at 528 Blue Water Drive in Moon. According to the staff report, the inn would be operated year round and would employ a housekeeper and a groundskeeper. The site currently contains a 2,214-square-foot home, boat house, storage building and pool along Stutts Creek and Hudgins Creek shorelines, said the report. No physical changes are intended.

Tourist homes are conditionally permitted uses in the residential zone and meet with the comprehensive plan’s guidelines for encouraging tourism, said the staff report.

The Virginia Department of Transportation has said the entrance to the property is adequate for a bed and breakfast facility. Although the projected two to six guests per night at the home would cause an increase in traffic, said the report, it isn’t expected to be detrimental to the surrounding thoroughfares, and the increased tax revenue and tourist traffic at local businesses would be beneficial to the county’s economy.
