Hearing Tuesday on off-street parking changes
The Mathews County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors will hold a joint public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the historic courthouse on Court Street to consider revising the zoning ordinance pertaining to minimum off-street parking.
The proposed revisions would standardize the aisle width to 12 feet for one-way traffic and 24 feet for two-way traffic, and reduce the width and length required for parking spaces and access aisles for handicapped access.
Revisions would allow for shared parking for two or more adjoining buildings or uses under certain circumstances and give the zoning administrator the authority to reduce space requirements for shared parking for two businesses with different operating hours.
Under the proposal, the types of material that could be used for the parking surface would be expanded with the designation "other approved all-weather surface," and guidelines on illuminating parking areas would include business as well as residential areas.
