Harmful waste collection to be held Saturday in Hayes

The fall collection of harmful household waste will be held from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Guinea Road Convenience Center, 7599 Guinea Road, Hayes.

Sponsored by the Gloucester Clean Community Committee in conjunction with Waste Management, Clean Community coordinator Bill Bell said the program is the best way for Gloucester residents to rid their residences of hazardous items in a safe manner.

This event provides an opportunity to dispose of properly automobile waste such as antifreeze, brake and transmission fluids, gasoline and gasoline mixtures and batteries, Bell said. Also, paint and painting supplies will be collected including thinners, solvents, epoxies and wood preservatives.

Residents can also bring in pesticides and herbicides, a Gloucester Community Education release said, as well as household items such as toxic household cleaners, drain cleaners, mercury, pool chemicals, and main computers and monitors. If you miss this collection, the next one will be held in Gloucester is April 21, 2012.

Items that cannot be accepted include ammunition, explosives, fireworks, asbestos, drugs and medical waste, television sets, computer keyboards and printers, radioactive waste and regular household trash, the release said.
