With Halloween falling on Sunday this year, many residents have questioned whether localities will be designating Saturday or Sunday night as "official" trick-or-treat nights.

According to county spokesperson Christi Lewis, Sunday from 5:30-8 p.m. has been designated the official time in Gloucester for children 12 and under to go door to door to participate in the Halloween tradition. Mathews County has no designated night or time.

For those who wish to participate in more structured activities, the Gloucester Main Street Association is hosting its annual "Main Street Trick or Treat" for children 12 and under from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Participants will be able to visit the Main Street businesses and other organizations along Main Street for treats.

Main Street Gloucester will be closed to through traffic between Bangkok Noi restaurant and the court circle from 5-8 p.m. Saturday to ensure a safe environment for the youngsters, according to Jenny Crittenden, executive director of GMSA. For more information, call the association at 695-0700.

In Mathews, Mathews Memorial Library will offer "Goosebumps at the Library" Friday from 3:30 to 5 p.m., including games and treats.

The Bay School Cultural Arts Center on Main Street will help children make trick or treat bags from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, free of charge.

Finally, families can meet at the Mathews County Visitor and Information Center from 2-4 p.m. Saturday to go trick or treating at the various merchants. For more information, visit www.visitmathews.com.

In Middlesex County, the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park will host "Scary Halloween in the Park" from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday. For more information, including directions to the 36-acre Deltaville park, visit www.deltavilleva.com.
