Approximately 150 people, including invited state and local government officials and interested residents, attended Saturday morning’s grand opening ceremony for the new Gloucester Library Point branch at York River Crossing Shopping Center, Hayes.

"This place really looks nice," said Buddy Rilee, chairman of the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors. The new branch, he said, is "a real change" from the former space on Route 17, Gloucester Point, which once housed a dental office, and that gave good service to the county for about 20 years.

With the opening of the new 3,900-square-foot branch, York district supervisor Carter Borden said, "Gloucester Court House does not have everything now, does it?" Borden said he spoke on behalf of Gloucester Point supervisor Bobby Crewe, who could not attend the ceremony. Also, Borden said that he "could throw a baseball" to the library from his district nearby.

"The library is essential to the community," said Del. Harvey B. Morgan (R-Middlesex). Morgan said that he first used a library when the original library opened in Gloucester Court House in the mid-1930s.
