A landmark on Gloucester’s Main Street will be undergoing a complete makeover in the coming months. The Hall family, owners of Edgehill Shopping Center, recently announced plans to redesign the entire facility by phases.

With the initial phase of the redesign being delayed, the agent for the family, Walter Alford, said construction has begun on phase II, which will include new construction within the confines of the existing shopping center structure on its eastern end.

This phase will include 6,000 square feet of office space to accommodate two or three tenants, Alford said. It will also include 2,500 square feet of open courtyard, which will be landscaped and include sculptures and possible water features.

"In this phase, we will include a new roof design and front entryway for the Sears store, which will make up approximately 170 feet of the eastern end of the shopping center, or about 1/3 of the entire facility," Alford said.

"It will lift the visual effect of the shopping center dramatically," he added.

"We want to create a new name for Edgehill to become Edgehill Town Center," said Jim and Fred Hall, spokespersons for the Hall family.

The family has been working with Jenny Crittenden of the Main Street Association, who has encouraged improving the appearance of the shopping center to make it more in keeping with recent Main Street enhancements.
