Gloucester adopts CodeRED Alert System

Gloucester County has a new system to alert residents to impending danger and update them during emergency events. The county recently enacted its CodeRED Alert System, which gives Gloucester County officials the ability to deliver messages quickly to targeted areas of the county.

The system, provided by Emergency Communications Network, LLC, gives those who want to be included an easy and secure method for inputting information. Data collected will only be used for emergency notification purposes, according to Garrey Curry, Gloucester’s interim emergency management coordinator.

Upon registering through the county’s website, www.gloucesterva.info, residents will have the opportunity to register their landline or cell phone numbers to correspond with their primary address that will also be entered in the system. Alerts sent to the cell phone will correspond with the address registered, and not with the current location of the phone, in case one is traveling out of the area.

For the system to work correctly, Curry said it is crucial for residents to provide their information and to make sure the information is kept up to date. “If your phone number is not in the database, you will not be called,” he said. One of the reasons the CodeRED system was selected is that it provides individuals and businesses with the ability to add their own phone numbers directly to the system’s database, which is an extremely important feature.

“No one should automatically assume his or her phone number is included,” Curry said, urging all individuals and businesses to log on to the Gloucester County website and follow the link to the CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment page.
