Four injured in Hallieford accident

Four people were taken to the hospital with injuries last Wednesday following an automobile accident at the corner of Route 198 and Hallieford Road in Mathews.

According to Trooper Austin Pittman of the Virginia State Police, the accident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. when a 2000 Mercury Mystique traveling east on Route 198 swerved into the opposite lane to avoid hitting a 2004 Mazda that was stopped to turn onto Hallieford Road. The Mercury instead clipped the Mazda, then struck an oncoming 2006 GMC pickup truck head-on, causing the GMC to roll over, Pittman said.

The driver of the Mercury, a 16-year-old girl, was taken to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Her passenger, a 16-year-old boy, was flown by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with extensive, life-threatening injuries. He was discharged yesterday. Both were trapped in the car and had to be cut out, said Pittman.
