There’s a chance that residents of Gloucester and Mathews counties may see a white Christmas, as rain and snow showers may be passing through the area on Saturday and on into Sunday, according to the National Weather Service office in Wakefield.

The wintry mix, if it develops here, would be the result of a low-pressure system expected to form in the Gulf of Mexico and then head up the East Coast, an NWS report said.

Chance of precipitation was listed at 40 percent on Saturday and 60 percent for Sunday, although the forecast did not specify any snow accumulation totals.

Friday’s high temperature should be in the low 40s, with weekend highs in the upper 30s. Lows should be in the 20s, the report said.
