Filing deadline today for GOP primary for sheriff

Republican candidates for Gloucester sheriff who wish to participate in the June 12 primary must file their paperwork with Gloucester’s voter registrar and the Republican Party chairperson by 4:30 p.m. today, according to Gloucester registrar Bobbi Morgan.

As of Tuesday, two candidates had filed their paperwork for the GOP nomination—current Sheriff Darrell Warren and former Gloucester Sheriff’s Office employee Jim Ledbetter, Morgan said.

The June primary will decide the RepublicanParty nominee for Gloucester sheriff locally. A special election has been scheduled Nov. 6 to fill the seat of former Gloucester sheriff Steve Gentry, who resigned only a month into his second term citing personal reasons. The special election will coincide with the presidential election.

The June 12 Republican primary will also include candidates for U.S. Senate and House of Representative. Voters may instead opt that day to take part in the Democratic Party primary, where that party’s nominees for Congress will be chosen.

Virginia election law stipulates that while any qualified voter may vote in either political party’s primary, no voter may vote in more than one political party’s primary on the same Election Day. "You will have to decide which ballot you would like to vote," Morgan said.
