East River Boatyard, Put-In Creek Park among top board priorities

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors held its annual retreat on June 27, but the members didn’t retreat very far or for very long. The board met at Mathews Memorial Library for three-and-a-half hours to set goals and prioritize projects for the upcoming year.

County administrator Mindy Moran said the board placed development of the East River Boatyard and Put-In Creek Park at the top of the list of priorities, along with drainage correction projects in the Court House and renovating the county administration building.

As a new project, Moran suggested that the board might want to consider revamping gateway, directional and interpretive county signs so that people unfamiliar with Mathews will be better able to find their way to recreational facilities and points of interest.

Under human resources, Moran said the board discussed the possibility of redefining the terms "full time" and "part time" for county employees so they would apply more uniformly across county departments, and they talked about ways to implement a fair system of evaluation for Moran to use for staff members and for the board to use when evaluating her performance. Because of continuing budget concerns, Moran said that some vacant county positions won’t be filled, including an administrative assistant position in the county administrator’s office and an employee in buildings and grounds.
