Local children responded enthusiastically to a Gazette-Journal request that they submit letters and images to illustrate how they felt about Earth Day. Their submissions were thoughtful, colorful, and artistic. Enjoy these selected thoughts and the accompanying drawings.
Think for the Greater Good
We all live on a rock we call earth.
We only take and never give
You never know how special something is until it’s… gone.
Like the waves slowly and peacefully washing the sea shore.
Or the cool summer grass in between your toes.
No one appreciates the little things
They are only thinking about money.
That thing, the green piece of paper we give so much value.
Money is killing our world.
Not the world with stock markets and factories sending out toxic fumes.
Money is killing the world with dewdrops on tulips and icicles on tree branches.
None of these amazing things will be here if we keep killing for happiness and artificial wealth.
Save your earth.
Save your home.
Save your life.
The clouds that were once white like snow, fluffy like cotton are now brown like dirt thick like metal.
The animals that found the forest their home now find nothing but bared land.
The river that I swam in as a kid is now a wasteland.
The field I would run around trying to catch fire flies are now commercial buildings.
We forget about what is happening but, it is time to get your head out of your phone and become aware of what’s happening to the world we live in.
This is what I will do
What Earth Day means to me is HOPE for the world. On Earth Day my Boy Scout Troop and I go around HELPING our community by picking up trash around churches and public areas. I also go around my neighborhood to SEE if there is any trash around to pick up. My family and I try to RECYCLE as much as possible to help the environment. This is what I do on Earth Day and is what I will do for the rest of my life.
Earth Day Importance
The earth needs protection.
Somewhere in the world millions of trees are being cut down. Every day the air gets polluted by: cars, factories… Fish in the ocean die every day because of pollution. People put trash in the ocean. What would happen if a turtle got its head stuck in a bag. If you guessed it would die you’re right.
Next time you throw out trash. Think about all the wild life you’re killing.
There are so many resources destroyed every day. Examples are: trees, water, air, land. Those who don’t care. Should start to care. One day you’ll regret not caring. The world is going away piece by piece. Then it will all be gone. Help clean your planet.
Don’t waste time destroy the earth. Recycle your trash. Just think if you were a fish in the seas you wouldn’t survive. If we want to help our environment we need to recycle, also keep our trash out of the water and off the land.
Please take action. Help you and your generations to come have a future.

The Dirty Park
In the town of Avalanche City there was a girl named Kelly. Kelly’s favorite day of the year, (other than her birthday and Christmas) was Earth Day. Every Earth Day Kelly would make a huge banner with an Earth day fact on it. But this Earth day was different. That morning Kelly got up and got her banner paper and wrote the face, “more than 100 billion pieces of junk mail are delivered in the US each year.” She then decorated it in blue and green. She ran upstairs and got dressed in an old brown top and old red leggings and pulled her hair back and put on old black gym shoes and raced out the door with a box of trash bags, laytex gloves and her banner. She put all of it in her handle bar basket on her bike and rode to the school where she put the banner every year. She then rode to the park. She locked her bike up on the fence, grabbed her things and went inside. Her friends were lounging under a tree. She raced over to them when they called her over “whatcha doing Kelly.” Harper asked. “I’m going to clean the park.” She said to her Bff. “Yea good luck with that, said Harper. Kelly had to agree. Avalanche park was Thithy but someone had to do it. Trash was everywhere. “Don’t waste your time Kelly, it’s a beautiful Saturday and you want to spend it cleaning!? Plus the park is a huge mess, so forget it. Carola sounded shocked. “Well, I’m ot forgetting it, and I’m doing it!” And with that Kelly slid on some gloves and got to sork. Some people just walked by her others pointed but said nothing. Her friends laughed at her. But she cleaned the park and proved everyone wrong. She did more than clean. She cleaned the planet.

Earth Day is the one day
Earth Day is the one day of the year where millions of people from all around the world actually take their time to think about the Earth. They think about the world without trees or plants. They also think about ways for caring for the Earth. I believe that this day should be filled with joy and celebration, not hatred and despair. Have you ever thought about what it would be like not to have any animals left or to have to live without a sturdy roof over your head. Well that nightmare just might come true if we don’t stop polluting and cutting down needed trees; then our world is going to fall apart drastically, right in the middle of our palms.
I believe that all the new technology is great and all but not if it is tearing apart what we call home. I think that there should be limits to the destruction we are causing to the Earth. Can we please think of ways to build up the Earth instead of tearing it down. So many people are talking about how amazing our world is becoming with all the latest trends and technology but what they really don’t understand is how much of the world we’re losing instead of gaining. It is all over the world where innocent animals are becoming extinct because their natural habitats are getting cut down or polluted. I don’t think what we are doing is right! There are whole families of species out in the wild and we are acting like immature kids and taking away their home! This is honestly a huge problem that needs to be solved right now!
I think that Earth was created to give us all that special feeling that we have a home to come back to after a hard day at work or just that pleasure we have of laying outside on the fresh green grass with the sun shining in our faces. I feel like if we keep up with all this nonsense then our future generation won’t be able to have all the fun and memories we had playing outside; climbing trees, swimming, and anxiously running through the fields. I believe that if we start now then we will have time to fix our mistakes we made and turn the world upside down. Just by cleaning up trash on the beach, recycling, planting more trees, and just not polluting then I believe that we still have a chance at healthy living conditions.
Keep Earth clean
If we get rid of the things that make earth “earth” then what will earth be like, will it be death and fire, or will we have to go to a new planet because we cannot rely on earth to save us. Earth is a wonderful place and it should be kept clean and alive because we live here and our friends and family and future generations live here. We must keep the earth clean and alive because if we don’t, then we lose everything our friends and family, future generations and our pets so they won’t have a bad future but a good one, so they can live in happiness and peace. That is why we must keep the earth clean and alive so we can be happy too.
