Dual primary may be held in Gloucester, Mathews

Voters in Gloucester and Mathews counties may have to choose between the Democratic and Republican parties even before they enter the polling booth in three months’ time, as dual primary elections may be held locally on June 11.

Gloucester County registrar Bobbi Morgan said the Virginia State Board of Elections has notified her that the Democratic Party has requested a primary for the offices of governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. Meanwhile, Republicans have requested a primary to pick the GOP candidate for the 98th District in the House of Delegates, as well as three seats on the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors.

After the April 2 filing deadline has passed, the state board will determine if a dual primary will be held in either or both of the counties. If no more than one candidate from each party is running for each seat, then there will be no need for a primary election for that seat, Morgan said.

In Gloucester, the at-large, Petsworth and York district seats are up for election.

In Mathews, voter registrar Ruth Ann Hutson said county supervisors O.J. Cole Jr. and Geneva Putt are up for re-election this year. However, neither the Mathews Republican nor Democratic committees has yet requested a primary to select nominees for those seats.
