Members of the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors voted 5-2 Tuesday night to allocate up to $230,000 toward design work and bids for the repurposing of T.C. Walker Elementary School. At-large supervisor Louise Theberge made the motion following about an hour of discussion during the board of supervisors’ work session in the colonial courthouse.

At-large supervisor Ashley Chriscoe and Ware district supervisor Andy James voted against allocating the money, concerned that the county was spending too much money at one time, especially with the ongoing discussion about the new Page Middle School.

The school board first presented its plans for the T.C. Walker Educational Center during a joint meeting with the board of supervisors last month. At that meeting, several supervisors criticized the $3.5 million proposed cost to convert the former school building to office space for school administration and to make other areas of the school available for community use.

The school was closed in June because of budget limitations.
