Delays reported in Twigg Bridge work
There have been delays in activating traffic signals on Route 3 at the John Andrew Twigg Bridge between Mathews and Middlesex counties.
A traffic signal was to have been activated on each side of the bridge over the Piankatank River to control traffic beginning at noon this Tuesday, said Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson Tina Bundy. However, the contractor was not able to begin work at that time, she said, because he had not properly calculated the work involved.
VDOT expects the signals to be in place at the bridge by early summer, Bundy said, and still anticipates the project to be completed in 2014.
Once installed, the signals will be operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week, during the two-year bridge rehabilitation project.
One travel lane will be closed on the bridge throughout the project, Bundy said, with northbound and southbound traffic alternating crossing the bridge in a single travel lane. A concrete barrier will separate traffic from the work zone on the bridge.
