Deadline for Mathews tax payments moved to June 30

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to extend the deadline for the payment of real estate taxes for the first half of 2011 from June 5 to June 30.

County administrator Steve Whiteway suggested the date change because of the reassessment. On Wednesday morning, Whiteway explained that normally the public hearing for adopting the budget can be held seven days after the budget is published, but during a reassessment year, if the equalized tax rate is increasing, there has to be a 30-day space between the public notice and the public hearing. That means tax bills can’t go out earlier than the end of May, said Whiteway, which would make a June 5 deadline unfair.

The board set its budget adoption meeting for 7:30 p.m. on May 16, one week after the May 9 public hearing on the budget, which will be held at 7 p.m. at Thomas Hunter Middle School.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the board also approved the Virginia Department of Transportation’s fiscal year 2012-2017 road plan after a public hearing, during which no residents commented.

Under the plan, a number of currently unpaved primary county roads will be paved over the next six years as VDOT’s budget allows. At the suggestion of VDOT residency engineer Sean Trapani, supervisors approved budgeting improvements to Bethel Beach Road and Lillies Lane and adding Brittany Lane and Heath Road to the list of roads marked for future improvements.

That list already includes Sopers Road and Field Point Road, which Trapani said should be completed this year, and Captains Drive, which he said might be completed this year.
