County gives school board Dec. 31 deadline to move to T.C. Walker

The Gloucester County Board of Supervisors will be kicking out school administration from Office Building 2, by Dec. 31.

Supervisors voted 6-1 during the board meeting Tuesday night in the colonial courthouse to send a letter to the school board notifying it that the county will need the space for its employees beginning next year.

The vote follows a lack of decision by the school board last week on how much money it wanted to request from the board of supervisors to allocate for renovating the Thomas Calhoun Walker Education Center. Supervisors had requested that the school board bid out the work so that school administration could move into that facility, freeing Building 2 for county departments.

The bids came back to the school board on Feb. 12 at just over $3.6 million to do the first phases of work on T.C. Walker. However, some school board members said they wished to see work completed on the new Page Middle School before starting on T.C. Walker.

Adding to the mix, the county recently sold and is now renting Building 3 and is locked in to a lease through Sept. 1, making it all the more urgent in supervisors’ minds to get those departments relocated at the end of the lease.
