Mathews supervisors were hit by complaints from all sides during Tuesday night’s board meeting. Around two dozen people turned out, some to voice their opinions on everything from the litter control ordinance that was the subject of the night’s public hearing to a decision to move animal control from the sheriff’s office back to administration.

The commissioner of the revenue and the county treasurer also spoke out, objecting to reductions in their budgets.

During the opening public comment period, when residents were allowed to address matters that weren’t the subject of a public hearing, Sharon Slaughter of Cobbs Creek accused the board of not addressing the needs of the Wade Brooks family. Brooks and his family have been living in a trailer on their Garden Creek property since their home was damaged by storms. The house was elevated under a FEMA grant awarded to the county, but Brooks stopped the work because he claimed it was subpar and the building unsafe.

Earlier this year, the Virginia Board for Contractors fined the builder, HHM LLC of Kentucky, for "negligence and/or incompetence in the practice of contracting" as well as a number of violations, including conspiring to violate the regulation governing contract, licensing and warranty requirements.
