Commissioners address coordination of historical planning in Gloucester

Gloucester might benefit from the formation of an umbrella group to coordinate some of the long-term efforts of the various historical groups in the county, said Keith Belvin, chairman of the Gloucester County Planning Commission.

During a discussion about the cultural and heritage chapter of the proposed comprehensive plan revisions Thursday night in the colonial courthouse, planning director Anne Ducey-Ortiz said there are many groups interested in history here and said Belvin’s suggestion should be explored.

"It’s a good idea," planning commissioner Henry McVey said.

Also during the discussion about the county’s history, Belvin suggested plans can be made to "observe our history from the water," as Gloucester has a number of historic places, like Werowocomoco, Rosewell and others, which can be seen from the water.

Ducey-Ortiz said that Belvin’s idea ties in with planning staff’s support of a "blueways trail" to see parts of the county from the water.
