The 2012 Mathews Ruritan Christmas Blessing Fund will begin its yearly campaign next week, with letters going out to the community requesting help in providing financial assistance to needy families in Mathews County with their winter heating bills.

This year’s campaign chairman is Robert A. May, reported treasurer Cathy Rowe. She said May has faithfully served the citizens of Mathews as a local pharmacist and owner of Hudgins Pharmacy since 1984. May also serves on the Main Street Committee and is a member of Kingston Episcopal Parish and the Chesapeake Pharmaceutical Association.

"The Christmas Blessing Fund has reached so many different people over the years and provided help to a lot of needy people in our community. I’d like to encourage everyone in Mathews to look into their hearts this Christmas season and reach into their pockets to help this worthy cause," May said.

Donations in 2011 exceeded the goal of $25,000 and fund organizers are hopeful that this year’s campaign will again top the $25,000 goal, Rowe said. A total of 123 families received much needed financial assistance with their heating expenses last year, she said. Over the years, many people have come to depend on the Christmas Blessing Fund as one source in making ends meet through the winter months, Rowe said, adding, "We are blessed with a caring community and feel privileged to be a part of this endeavor."
