Bulkhead repair application denied

The Mathews County Wetlands Board denied an application for a permit for work that would impact wetlands during a meeting on Jan. 4.
On a unanimous vote, board members denied an application by Paul Verbyla of Mathews, to repair and replace a 30-foot failed wooden bulkhead on Put-In Creek. The project would have included planting smooth cord grass in the intertidal area. In his motion to deny, board member Ted Broderson said that the bulkhead was an undesirable means of erosion control and was unnecessary in the proposed location.
Also during the meeting, an application by the Bavon Home Owners Association was deferred for 30 days at the request of the applicant. The proposed project consists of building four headland breakwaters, extending a pipe 109 feet, adding 44,000 cubic yards of beach nourishment, and planting wetlands grasses.
