Firefighters in both Gloucester and Mathews were kept on their toes, responding non-stop to calls related to brush fires beginning early in the morning and lasting long into the evening. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

One fire in the Guinea area burned over 100 acres and threatened nearby structures. A fire in Gloucester on New Upton Farms Lane caused a portion of nearby Fary’s Mill Road to be shut down for a period of time.

The day started early for members of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. Robert Parlett, public information officer for the department, said firefighters received a call around 6:30 a.m. about a 12-acre burn off Zack Road near Hayes.

Parlett said he believed the fire had been burning Sunday and through Sunday night, but was isolated in a wooded area that fire apparatus could not reach. He said the Virginia Department of Forestry was contacted and an area was plowed to contain the blaze.
