Board to hold hearing on change to building permit fees
The Mathews County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, April 22 on a proposed change to the building permit ordinance as it relates to fees. The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. in the historic courthouse.
The county is proposing removing the building permit fee schedule from the ordinance, instead establishing fees on an annual basis, similar to the way in which tax rates and fees for vehicle and boat licenses are revisited annually.
Some of the fees proposed for the coming year represent an increase over the current year’s fees, including a $40 minimum for any electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or building permit, an increase from the current $25.
Additional charges include $20 for 1-50 outlets and $30 for 51-100 outlets, each of which represents a $10 increase; $3 for installation of each plumbing fixture, which remains unchanged; and $4 per $1,000 of the estimated cost for installation or replacement of mechanical systems or equipment, also unchanged.
Also proposed is a $.12 per square foot fee for constructing a new building, manufactured home, modular home, addition, garage or deck, double the current $.06 per square foot, and a $40 permit fee for demolishing a structure.
If the fee schedule is approved, a certificate of occupancy will cost $75, and the penalty for beginning work without a permit will be the greater of $40 or 10 percent of the total fee due.
