The Gloucester County Wetlands Board approved the lone new shoreline improvement application before it during a meeting June 13 in the colonial courthouse.

Environmental programs administrator Scott Rae said that applicant Michael B. Dobson was granted permission to install 219 linear feet of marsh toe sill using plastic and wire mesh bags of oyster shell. The project is situated along the York River at 9438 Cuba Road.

The bags will be placed singly or in stacks of three to five depending on specific marsh conditions, a staff report said.

No structure will be placed more than one foot above the adjacent marsh elevation, Rae said. The bags will weigh between 30 and 50 pounds and are approximately 18"x8"x6". All materials will be hand placed with construction access across the non-vegetated area.

The staff report said that concrete reef balls and/or oyster castles may be incorporated into the sill, if available. The bottom width of the structure is not to exceed three feet.

In other business, the commission granted the request of Christopher Welch for an extension for his shoreline improvement application. The expiration date of the work is now Aug. 31, 2013.

Rae said that Welch previously received a permit for the repair and replacement of 136 linear feet of bulkhead along Wilson Creek at 5400 Three Mile Lane.
