The Gloucester Library branch may only be closed to the public for about one week following its move to new quarters in early August, library director Diane Rebertus said Thursday.

The library may begin occupying the leased space at York River Crossing Shopping Center, Hayes, which previously housed a portion of a Sentara medical clinic and a floral shop, on Aug. 1, Rebertus said.

Some books have been culled from the branch collection in preparation for the move, but many of the books and some of the equipment at the present branch will be moved once the new space has been turned over for county use, Rebertus said.

A professional moving company will handle the main move, along with support from Gloucester buildings and grounds and library staff.

Rebertus said the library will hold a "soft opening" in August, then will hold a grand opening celebration in October. Plans for both openings will be announced as information becomes available.

A fundraising committee began meeting in April, and a number of donations have already been received.
