Arrests made in ‘grandparent scam’

A woman has been convicted and a man is in prison pending trial in Harris County, Texas, in a case involving a "grandparent scam" perpetrated against North resident Alandus Ware.

Yvette Consuelo Hurst, 31, of Houston, Texas, was convicted in the district court of Harris County in October of felony theft from the elderly, $1,500-$20,000, and was sentenced to serve two years in jail.

Damon Nobles, 25, of Katy, Texas, is awaiting trial on charges of engaging in organized criminal activity and felony theft from the elderly, $20,000-$100,000. He is scheduled to appear in Harris County District Court on Feb. 15, said Harris County identity theft section chief John Brewer. At that time, he will either plead guilty or ask for a trial.

The charges stem from crimes committed against Ware last summer as part of the nationwide grandparent scam. Ware received several calls, supposedly originating in Canada, from a person purporting to be either Ware’s grandson or a police officer holding Ware’s grandson in custody on drug charges.
