Area residents encouraged to Shop Local on Saturday
The first Shop Local Day was held in the area last November and was such a success that the bank and chamber decided to co-sponsor another opportunity for local merchants to show residents the benefits of shopping close to home.
Chesapeake Bank’s business development coordinator Melissa Alexander said the bank, which prides itself on its focus on the community, planned the initial Shop Local Day in hopes of encouraging residents to keep their dollars in the community rather than taking them elsewhere.
There has even been a decal designed for Shop Local Day that reads, "Your buck stays here."
Shop Local Day doesn’t just encompass Gloucester and Mathews, Alexander said. Chesapeake Bank supports the theme throughout its service region with the cooperation of those areas’ chambers of commerce.
Gloucester Chamber executive director Makalia Records said the purpose of Shop Local is to make the community aware that local merchants can fill the needs of the residents and visitors of Gloucester County.
"Our local businesses, big and small, invest in the Gloucester community, as they are the ones active on boards and in service clubs throughout the county," Records said. "We need to support them in their shops and businesses wherever possible. We feel they are the fabric of our community; many people shop online or drive across the river, but buying from local merchants benefits the community in many ways."
