Gloucester resident Andy James, 68, was seriously injured Thursday morning when the tractor he was driving was rear-ended by a vehicle traveling westbound on Route 14.

First Sgt. Kevin Barrick of the Virginia State Police reported that the accident occurred at 8:44 a.m., less than a mile east of the entrance to Ware Neck.

Barrick said James was traveling westbound toward Gloucester Court House in a 1998 Massey Ferguson tractor, when a 2002 Dodge Caravan driven by Cobbs Creek resident Charann K. Deagle struck him from behind.

The driver of the Caravan was transported to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Barrick said.

James was airlifted by Life Evac helicopter to Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News where he is in the intensive care unit. Barrick was uncertain of his condition as of Thursday evening.

According to Barrick, James was traveling at between 25-30 miles per hour and Deagle rear ended him going about 55 miles per hour.

James was traveling in the right lane and Deagle came up behind him and “just didn’t see him,” Barrick said.

James announced in March he would be running as an independent for the Ware district seat on the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors, a seat currently held by Gregory Woodard.
