The Mathews Family YMCA opened its spring soccer program on Saturday on brand-new fields in Hudgins, part of the property that will one day house a new fitness center. A total of 110 children are participating. Here, instructor Craig Todd works with a group of 4-5 year-olds. Several different contractors were busy last summer at the site behind Donk’s Theater in preparation for this opening. First, the land was donated to the Y. A significant amount of sitework was required, including removing trees, relocating a VDOT ditch and grading the field to insure proper drainage. All contactors selected to prepare the field for games donated labor, materials or upgraded service. This saved the Y several thousand dollars and will provide a first-class playing field for many years to come, branch director Sheila Pillath said. Photo by Charlie Koenig
