4th of July celebrations to be held Sunday, Monday
Fireworks will light up the skies on Sunday and Monday, as July 4 celebrations are held in Mathews, Gloucester Point and Yorktown.
The Mathews County Fireworks Committee will host its annual fireworks display on Sunday evening at Mathews High School, with spectators gathering at the school’s football field and stands.
"Everybody told us last year’s display was just as good as Yorktown’s or Waterside’s. People can expect the same this year," committee spokesperson Charles Ingram said.
Rather than being held on Monday, July 4, this year’s fireworks display will be lit off Sunday evening to help committee volunteers as they clean up from the show.
"A lot of the guys that help us have to go back to work Tuesday morning," Ingram said, "and it usually takes us most of the morning the day after the show to clean up from it."
According to Ingram, the committee collected enough money for the fireworks display, but had to forego having a band at the stadium because adequate funds. "We are having a DJ coming," Ingram added. He said Mathews resident Tommy Eriksen will provide the music starting at 7 p.m. until the fireworks display, which is scheduled to begin around 9:15.
