100 years and more celebrated at Sanders

Gloucester residents Ray Hooker and Elsie Bright celebrated special birthdays last week. Hooker turned 106 last Tuesday and Bright turned 100 last Thursday. Photos by Quinton Sheppard.
Bright's paintings fill a wall.
Bright, born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1912, grew up there and went to school there. She was also an active member of Oklahoma Church of the Brethren. She married and raised her children in Ohio before moving with her husband to Winston-Salem, N.C., for his work.
After living in North Carolina for about 45 years, Bright decided to move to Gloucester to be closer to her daughter.
She said she didn’t want to speculate on the secret to her longevity, but said, "I figured when the Lord’s ready for me, He’ll take me. He has a reason for me being here."
Bright’s interests remain wide. She said she enjoys being with the people at Sanders and she also still enjoys all kinds of needlework, making pine needle baskets, Christmas ornaments and painting. The walls to her room are lined with many different kinds of paintings and other artwork she has completed over the years.
