“Help Us Help You” is the theme. Mark your calendar right now for Feb. 1. It’s an evening at the Piankatank Ruritan Club at Hudgins where you can taste and then eat all the chili you can hold along with cornbread, drinks and dessert, and at the same time learn about what local organizations are doing for the community. The Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad is presenting the first Super “Bowl” Chili Cook-Off.

Mathews Rotary, Mathews Lions, Piankatank Ruritans, American Legion Post 83, Knights of Columbus and “the possibility of a couple more entries,” according to Ron Lambert, event chairman, will be vying for the title of “best chili makers” in Mathews County. Each ticket holder will have a chance to vote for a favorite while judges will be making their selection also. Two awards will be made: the public award and the judges’ award.

Tickets are now on sale; $14 (kids under 10 free); 2 for $26; $15 at the door. Only 600 are available and can be purchased from any member of the participating organizations and at Hudgins Pharmacy and Moughons, Inc. Ticket holders may want to take some chili home for their Super Bowl Sunday Party; extra quarts will be available at $8 each. You can enjoy beer with your chili but it is not included in your ticket price.

According to Lambert and Peggy Arutunian, “Each organization will benefit as the proceeds are then used within Mathews County. This is a win-win for the entire community. Help all of us help others.”

Serving on the committee with Lambert and Arutunian are Judy Buis and Jennifer Foster.
