Mathews County TRIAD is a partnership of the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office, Bay Aging, Mathews Active Lifestyle Center and older or retired persons in the community agreeing to work together. The positive results of this organization’s efforts has been witnessed and felt throughout the county for over 12 years. It was the brainchild of then-sheriff Danny Howlett and then-Captain Ann Shockley.

Mathews TRIAD has held 11 spring Safety Fairs and these have become very popular events, providing information about health, taxes, safety, legal matters, and more.

Last year the planning committee for TRIAD (president Jack Cranford, vice-president Tom Hunley, treasurer Dick Couch and secretary Cheryl Wheeler) started the Senior Open House Fall Fair.

At this year’s festival on Nov. 1, seniors not only got to learn about "Body Recall," Identity Theft, Wills and Trusts, Adult Exploitation, Tax Relief, Meals On Wheels and Ombudsmen for Long-Term Care, they also learned that a number of these volunteers were good cooks. Those arriving at 8:30 a.m. and later were greeted with hot coffee and buns, but for lunch Brunswick stew and chili were on the menu. When it came to dessert no one was left out. Besides a standard sweet cake The Cake Man Bakery had made a special cake for those with diabetes, so everyone got to enjoy a full meal.
