Mathews, Williamsburg roots grow into a family cookbook

"There are four generations of my family’s history and recipes in this book," Anne explained, as she sat in the second story of her home on Garden Creek, a site providing a breathtaking view of the area including the Chesapeake Bay. Winston, her pet dog, nestled beside her, watching as if he knew what was being said. "This book is primarily for family, especially my family (husband Elmo and two sons Garnett and Thomas), for my brother Vernon and my cousins, Cece and Martha, and their families. Being a history major I was given many family papers, thus the basis for the history in my book. I have become the family archivist and it was among these family records that I found some of these wonderful recipes. Included are recipes from Flossie and Louise who cooked for both my grandmother, Carrie Cole Lane Geddy, and ‘Auntie,’ Caroline Dudley Lane Cole. Their recipes were found in my grandmother’s recipe box which I have. Some recipes are from an 1840s cookbook that Auntie gave me. It had belonged to Elizabeth Labby Cole (1820-1885)."
