Breakfast, lunch, and benefit dinners
Getting into the restaurant business was not what Doug and Kim had in mind when Doug retired from the Navy and they moved to Gloucester in 1994. Kim explains how it all came about. "Doug was serving as a sheriff’s deputy in Henrico and I was working with Walmart when one day our son told us about a small restaurant that was for sale in the Court House and he thought we should buy it. Of course my reply was that we knew nothing about the restaurant business, but he thought with my experience of working with people and operating a cash register I could work the front and he would handle the kitchen. (Later) I was attending a group Bible study at my church and the subject was ‘Are You Doing What God Wants You To Do?’ Well, right then I decided to step into the restaurant business."
Doug and Kim opened in 2007 and she says, "the community has been great to us. We have the same people with us today that started out with us (except their son who now lives in New Jersey). Doug is our chef, he retired as a deputy, and I work the front."
Besides being well known for their good breakfasts and lunches seven days a week, and evening meals on the first Friday and Saturday and the second and fourth Thursday of each month, the restaurant is even more well known for its generosity and kindness to others. There is a free dinner for all every Thanksgiving Day, and twice a month they host fundraiser spaghetti dinners for non-profit organizations. "Doug does the spaghetti cooking and we ask that volunteers from whichever organization it might be do the waitress work. All proceeds go to the organization. We are booked up through November. I wish we could handle more. The community has been so good to us we want to give back."
