Sandpiper Reef Restaurant at Hallieford was converted for several hours into a semi-formal summer vacation wonderland where cocktails preceded a seated lunch of your choice of chicken or taco salad plate. Mimosas appeared to be the most popular cocktail; however, with other choices, there was no limit to anyone’s request. A specially designed bridal cake, made by a local friend and baker, topped off the elegant meal.
Summer flower arrangements in green containers adorned the tables laden with pink napkins atop white table cloths, along with a favor, pink with a touch of black, for each guest.
Nestled between two long tables was a large lawn umbrella under which sat three large outdoor lounge chairs (pink and green) surrounded by, to be opened later, colorfully wrapped packages and fully stuffed decorated bags. Bridal showers traditionally involve giving presents to future wives, but this shower far surpassed just gift-giving.
What is a bridal shower? The word shower is used to describe a party of friends assembled to present gifts, in this case to a bride-to-be. In “The Life of Timon of Athens,” William Shakespeare used the word to convey a copious supply bestowed when he wrote: “He and myself have travail’d in the great shower of your gifts.”
