Delhaize Group, the Belgian supermarket chain that owns Food Lion supermarkets in the United States, announced recently that it plans to close 113 underperforming stores in this country.
However, Christy Phillips-Brown, external communications director for Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion, said Jan. 17 that no Food Lion stores on the Middle Peninsula will close. The chain’s supermarkets at Walter Reed Plaza, Gloucester, and at York River Crossing Shopping Center, Hayes, will be renovated this winter, she said.
There are no current plans to renovate its stores at Mathews, which opened in 2003, or at Saluda, which Phillips-Brown said was last remodeled in 2008.
"They will be like a new store," Phillips-Brown said of the Gloucester and Hayes stores. Each will receive new décor, flooring, shopping carts, and some expansion of fresh produce, deli and meats, she said.
