August Soap House is a new soap-making and pottery shop located on Church Street, Mathews, in the building that houses several other businesses including an Allstate Insurance office. She runs the business on a part-time basis.

Carolyn August of New Point, makes custom soaps at the store and makes an assortment of pottery and ceramic soap dishes that she sells at the shop in her home studio. She also makes ceramic jewelry. August said she makes soap with a variety of scents—plus an unscented bar. She usually makes one type at a time in 12-pound batches, using essential oils in her product.

Self-taught, August said she has been making soap and pottery for more than 20 years, previously selling products at farmers’ markets and festivals in Northern Virginia.
