Steider & Associates, a psychotherapy, counseling and coaching practice with offices in Gloucester, Kilmarnock and Warsaw, recently added two new therapists to its staff.

James Morris, Ph.D., and Valarie Sikes-Nova, Psy.D., are the new faces on the staff. Sikes-Nova works only at the Gloucester office, while Morris works in Gloucester and at a separate group practice in Richmond.

Morris provides neuropsychological assessments. His specialties are family and individual psychotherapy with children, adolescents and adults.

Sikes-Nova, a licensed clinical psychologist, specializes in clinical work with women and children, clinical art therapy, and bibliotherapy/journaling.

Morris said that he believes more people are tolerant of individuals with mental illness and help advocate for them now than in years past. However, therapists cannot prescribe medications in Virginia as in some other states.

Sikes-Nova said it is important to offer individual and group counseling sessions, including play components like using a sand tray.

Previously, Sikes-Nova worked 15 years at Phillips & Rose, a counseling practice in Gloucester, and also worked in Norfolk. In all, she’s practiced for more than 25 years.
